DB2Universal database.

IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  have announced the general availability of DB2Universal database for z/OS Version 8 for IBM's eServer zSeries mainframes.

z/OS Version 8 for IBM's eServer zSeries mainframes.

The new database software delivers over 100 new features and functions that helps businesses automate the way information flows throughout the enterprise. New autonomic database features boost system performance and availability while easing application porting across age. New autonomic database features boost system performance and availability while easing application porting across multiple platforms Refers to two or more operating environments, which typically include the CPU family and operating system. For example, if versions of a program run on Windows and the Macintosh, the software is said to support multiple platforms. .

The new software simplifies application development with Java, enabling businesses to deploy new applications from a distributed environment, to the mainframe, using advanced SQL SQL

functionality that masks the complexity of deployment across platforms.

DB2 for z/OS Version 8 customers can now access and integrate business information in both distributed and mainframe DB2 data stores, using their existing DB2 database skill set while extending the value of new and existing applications across all platforms.

Autonomic features in the new software lowers the total cost of ownership for customers by increasing availability and minimising down time with new point-in-time recovery Point-in-time recovery in the context of computers is a system whereby a set of data or a particular setting can be restored or recovered from a time in the past. An example of this is Windows XP's feature of being able to restore operating system settings from a past date (before  functionality. Now database administrators can keep critical database services online while updating the database itself, and point-in-time recovery provides customers with a historical snapshot of the database to minimise data loss and simplify recovery efforts in the event of a system outage. Customers can also take advantage of the enhanced Query Management Facility (QMF (Query Management Facility) An IBM fourth-generation language for end-user interaction with DB2. ) business intelligence tool that includes:

Integration with IBM DB2 Cube Views that automates critical business information inside the database for any reporting or analysis tool.

The ability to easily build OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  analytics, SQL queries and other businessanalysis and intelligence reports with simple drag-and-drop actions that bring mainframe data into desktop applications. A new database explorer enables DBAs to identify and reference database assets using a single interface, and a new tool for WebSphere users lets any Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you.  become a zero-maintenance thin client for visual access to DB2 data.

DB2 for z/OS Version 8 users can also take advantage of the Unicode standard to access and integrate software application or database information regardless of their country of origin. Now multinational companies that useDB2 for z/OS and engage in international trade can more easily store and convert data from different languages.
