DAZZLE OF ALARCON CUTS COUNCIL FIELD FUENTES, MONTANEZ DROP OUT OF RACE.

Byline: KERRY CAVANAUGH Staff Writer

Faced with running against veteran politician Richard Alarcon, two candidates withdrew Monday from the race for the seat recently vacated by City Councilman Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. . Among the candidates who were looking to run for this open seat -- myself included -- no one has more experience than Richard Alarcon,'' said Fuentes, who added he'll have other opportunities to run for office.

Both Fuentes and Montanez said they will support Alarcon's bid to return to the 7th Council District seat he held from 1993 to 1998, before he served two terms in the state Senate.

Businesswoman and former Alarcon staffer Monica Rodriguez, however, said she will still pursue her campaign for council office.

``I didn't enter this race based on who was or wasn't in it. I'm still running, full steam ahead,'' she said.

The decision to drop out was a tough one for Montanez and Fuentes, who both announced their intention to run soon after Padilla won the Senate primary in June.

Montanez also said she didn't want to run a campaign against Alarcon, who gave her one of her first political jobs and was a major ally when she ran for Assembly.

``After some considerable thought, I have chosen not to run for Council District 7 this March 2007,'' she said in a printed statement. ``It is in the best interest of this area to avoid a destructive and damaging situation.''

Alarcon is able to run for the council under provisions of Proposition R, approved by voters last month, which allows City Council members to serve a third four-year term in office.

Alarcon was just sworn in last week to the state Assembly. Should he win the council seat, Fuentes could run for Alarcon's vacant Assembly seat. Montanez could also run for the Assembly seat, which she gave up two years early to run for the Senate against Padilla. However, her consultant Parke Skelton said she will not run for the Assembly seat if Alarcon is elected to the City Council.

Alarcon said Monday that he's happy to have the support of Fuentes and Montanez.

``Experience counts, and a lot of people have mentioned they would like to use the experience I had as City Council member so I can hit the ground running, so there's quick transition.''
