DAYTON HUDSON DECEMBER SALES UP 8.2 PERCENT

DAYTON HUDSON DECEMBER SALES UP 8.2 PERCENT
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Dayton Hudson Corporation

(NYSE: DH) today reported that its net retail sales for the four weeks ended Dec. 28, 1991, increased 8.2 percent to $2.45 billion from $2.26 billion a year ago.
Comparable-store sales were up 1.5 percent from the same period a year ago, reflecting the impact of one more holiday shopping day in the December 1991 accounting calendar.
Comparable-store sales for November-December combined were down 0.6 percent.
Stephen E. Watson, Dayton Hudson president, said that despite a last minute surge in business, sales for the month and the season were disappointing. "It's been a tough season due to the very low level of consumer confidence. We continued to see a high percentage of business coming on promotions as customers continued to be very selective.
"Our Target stores turned in the strongest performance among our companies. Mervyn's was hardest hit in its California-Arizona-Nevada markets where it experienced double-digit decreases during the month."
Watson said that the margin erosion and lower sales results will have a substantial impact on earnings, for the quarter and the year.
December sales by business segment for the four weeks were as follows:
-- Target's total sales increased 16 percent while comparable-store sales were up 6 percent.
-- Mervyn's total sales decreased 4 percent and comparable-store sales were down 8 percent.
-- The Department Store Division's total sales were up 2 percent and comparable-store sales were up 1 percent.
Sales for the 47 weeks ended Dec. 28, 1991, were $14.72 billion, up 8.9 percent from $13.51 billion in the same period a year ago. Comparable-store sales for the 47-week period were up 1.7 percent.
As of Dec. 28, 1991, Dayton Hudson operated 770 stores in 33 states.
