Olson put her belongings in storage and fled her Orlando, Fla., home three weeks ago for a new start in Eugene after she became fed up with this year's record-setting number of hurricanes.

"It cost me less to buy these items new than to have my Christmas things shipped to me from Florida," she said.

Olson chose Eugene because one of her sons graduated from Eugene Bible College A Bible college is an institution of higher education in which the course of study specializes in biblical studies. This curriculum differs from the focus on academic programs of Christian liberal arts colleges or research universities, which may include, but are not limited to,  and other family lived on the West Coast.

Retailers traditionally move holiday-themed items the day after Christmas by slashing prices. A little farther down the Gateway Mall, Diane Wells of Salem sipped a double tall latte at the mall's food court and mulled over how she'll spend her gift cards.

"Some people say giving money or gift cards is gauche," Wells said. `Well I say, `Show me the money.' '
