DAY IN SPORTS: VALENCIA ACE SHUTS DOWN SAUGUS'S POTENT LINEUP.

Courtney Baughman proved great pitching beats great hitting.

The Valencia High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  ace held high-scoring Saugus to three hits in a 5-1 victory to clinch the Foothill League championship in front of 400 on Thursday at Central Park in Saugus.

Baughman (10-0), a 5-foot-9 senior right-hander who has committed to Hawaii, has won 18 of 19 in her career.

She struck out just three but was in total command, retiring the first 11 before Victoria Kemp's bouncing double over third base broke up the perfect game with two out in the bottom of the fourth.

Valencia (25-3, 9-1) played errorless defense, sparked by shortstop Alyssa Ishibashi, who totaled nine putouts.

ALPHA LEAGUE

--Montclair Prep 5, Calvary Chapel Calvary Chapel is a non-denominational, Protestant fellowship of churches which began in 1965 in Southern California. The term "fellowship of churches" is used in contrast to a denomination.  Downey 0: Kirsten Slouber pitched her first no-hitter of the season, striking out 13 for host Montclair Prep of Panorama City (10-6, 4-4). Slouber struck out two of the three batters in the first, second, third and seventh innings.

GOLDEN LEAGUE

--Lancaster 4, Highland 3: Heather Sandberg pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as host Lancaster (14-11, 10-2) clinched its first ever league title.

 0: Kirstin Ware struck out 15 batters and pitched a perfect game for host Quartz Hill (16-8, 9-3). The sophomore has one other no-hitter this season.

OLYMPIC LEAGUE

--Malibu 14, Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  2: Brooks Fitch had five strikeouts in six innings of work and was 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI as Malibu (15-7, 10-2) clinched its first outright league title in program history with a win over visiting Santa Paula (11-14, 8-4).

--L.A. Baptist 9, Paraclete 7: Graham Miller pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts and Ryan McKenzie hit what proved to be a game-winning two run home run in the sixth as host L.A. Baptist of North Hills (18-3, 7-1) clinched the league title.

Teammate Brad Rice hit home runs in each of his first three at-bats before being walked his fourth time at the plate. He finished 3 for 3 with five RBI.

SUNSET SIX LEAGUE

--Verdugo Hills 8, North Hollywood 6: Anthony Herdliska's two-run home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference for host Verdugo Hills of Tujunga (13-8, 10-4). Herdliska finished 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Michael Yeh was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBI for North Hollywood.
