DAY IN SPORTS: TOP SEED WINS IN TENNIS.Byline: Daily News Olga Yepremian of Burbank lost just one game in the final to earn the Foothill League girls' tennis singles championship Thursday at the Burbank Tennis Center. Yepremian, the No. 1 seed who has lost just one set all season, defeated second-seeded Ashley Herrera of Valencia 6-0, 6-1 for the title. Missy Suarez and Lauren Tripp, who led Canyon to its best finish in league since 1982 as the Cowboys' top two singles players, opted to play doubles for the tournament - and won the championship. They defeated Burbank's Anna Nazaryan and Joanna Han 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the final. The top two in both singles and doubles advance to the Southern Section playoffs. - Heather Gripp In other girls' tennis: --Count them in: In a Mission League match with playoff implications, Lizzy Loffa won two of her three matches to lead Louisville of Woodland Hills to an 11-7 victory over Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to take third place in league. In prep cross country: --Grand Canyon: Canyon won the boys' and girls' titles for the second year in a row in the Foothill League cross country finals at Castaic Lake. Canyon senior Nick Zoetewey, a transfer from Saugus, defended his title in 14:48 over the 3-mile course. Juniors Luke Llamas (14:52) and Jameson Mora (14:54) and sophomore Ryan Morgan (14:55) were second, third and fourth. Sophomore Brenda Stevens and junior Jazmin Treadway, both timed in 17:43, and freshman Leanne Riggin (18:16) led a 1-2-3 Canyon finish in the girls' race. - Kirby Lee In girls' volleyball: --On a roll: Led by Tracey Neumeier and Brittany Strametz, La Canada remained undefeated in Rio Hondo League play with a 15-3, 15-6, 15-4 victory over Blair of Pasadena. Neumeier had seven kills and Strametz added 10 assists and seven aces for the Spartans (18-2, 10-0), ranked No. 4 by the Daily News. In girls' golf: --Channel League finals: La Reina of Thousand Oaks placed three girls in the top five at the Channel League individual championships played at the par 73 Buenaventura golf course. Anne Neumayr finished second with a two-day total of 173 and qualified for the Southern Section individual prelims, to be held Nov. 21 at Mission Lakes GC in Palm Desert. Molly Bradley (174) and Catherine Pease (178) finished third and fourth, respectively, and will petition for at-large berths to the tournament. In prep baseball: --Easy E: Eric Posthumus, a Daily News honorable-mention selection last year as a junior, has committed to UC Santa Barbara. --Seddon down: Canyon High pitcher Chris Seddon, who gained recognition over the summer when his fastball was clocked consistently over the 90-mph mark, orally committed to Loyola Marymount University. - Heather Gripp |
