Jena Laolagi and Shanda Esmonde combined for 29 rebounds for the Patriots (1-0). Teammate Lulu Villa scored 20 points and Ashley Howell added 14 for Birmingham, which advances to today's second round against tournament host University at 6:30 p.m.
