DAY IN SPORTS: SENIOR SETS KILLS RECORD IN VICTORY.

In a sport known mostly for solid team efforts, Verdugo Hills senior outside hitter Sara Bonet was recognized for an individual one in a Sunset League The Sunset League was a minor league baseball league that operated from 1947 through 1950. For the 1951 season, the league merged with the Arizona-Texas League to form the Southwest International League.  girls' volleyball win over Hollywood on Monday.

Verdugo Hills of Tujunga defeated visiting Hollywood 25-4, 25-9, 25-15, but it was Sara Bonet's six kills that helped her break the school record for career kills with a total of 245. The previous record was held by Janice Espindola in the 2000-02 season (240).

Espindola's younger sister, Jennifer, helped Bonet break the record with 18 assists in the win. Crystal Perryman contributed 14 kills and eight digs.

Sylmar (4-3, 4-0), which made it to the City Section semifinals last season, is looking strong in its attempt to defend its Valley Mission championship.

--Granada Hills d. Birmingham 3-0: Senior Amanda Peterson had 20 assists and senior Tiffany Hsai had 15 digs for Granada Hills (5-2, 3-1) in a 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 West Valley league win over visiting Birmingham of Lake Balboa (5-2, 2-2).

In girls' golf:

Geraldine Jiravanichsakul and Myra Hermoso won the singles tiebreakers and teammates Crystal Macaraeg and Shannon Oliphant won the doubles.
