DAY IN SPORTS: SECTION RULES, HELPS RESEDA, CLEVELAND.

Byline: Daily News

The City Section boys' basketball playoff hopes of Cleveland of Reseda and Taft of Woodland Hills improved Monday when the Section denied an appeal by perennial power Westchester High of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , sources said.

Westchester, the two-time Div. I state champion, was banned from postseason play this year after the City Section determined the school had violated section rules regarding the recruitment of players, most notably Amir Johnson Amir Jalla Johnson (born May 1, 1987 in Los Angeles, California) is an American professional basketball player for the NBA's Detroit Pistons.

Johnson is a power forward who was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 56th pick of the 2005 NBA Draft. He is listed at 6'9" (2.
, who had attended Verbum Dei of Los Angeles before enrolling at Westchester.

``They're going to have to put an asterisk by the title this season because Westchester isn't going to be there,'' Taft of Woodland Hills coach Derrick Taylor said. ``I'm torn. I know the guys over there at Westchester and they have a good team. But it's still good for a team like us because it opens things up.''

West Valley League rivals Cleveland of Reseda and Taft, as well as Fairfax of Los Angeles, now appear to be the front-runners for the top three seeds in the championship bracket, which begins in late February.

``In order to be the best you have to beat the best,'' Cleveland coach Andre Chevalier said. ``The field is a little thinner without now without Westchester in it. Anyone can win so it makes more interesting.''
