DAY IN SPORTS: SAUGUS CAN'T SOLVE TOP-RANKED PACIFICA.

The Saugus High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team got the showdown it wanted Friday by facing Pacifica of Garden Grove Garden Grove, city (1990 pop. 143,050), Orange co., S Calif., a suburb of Long Beach and Los Angeles, on the Santa Ana River; founded 1877, inc. 1956. Many of its residents work in nearby aerospace and defense installations, and there is light manufacturing. , the top-ranked team in Student Sports' National Fab 50 poll.

BOYS' SWIMMING

--Thousand Oaks 115, Moorpark 55: Ian Haga, Bob Howe and Hank Yan each won two events for visiting Thousand Oaks (2-0, 1-0).

Haga doubled in the 100-yard butterfly (54.60 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:54.33), Howe swept the 50 and 100 freestyles (22.14 and 51.18), and Yan was victorious in the 100 backstroke (59.52) and 200 individual medley (2:03.62).
