DAY IN SPORTS: QUARTZ HILL MAKES EARLY GOALS STAND UP, TAKES GOLDEN PRIZE.

The Quartz Hill High boys' soccer team scored two early goals to defeat visiting Lancaster 2-1 Friday, clinching outright its second consecutive Golden League title.

``I'm so proud to be their coach, they've matured beyond what I thought they were capable of,'' Quartz Hill coach Andre Matalon said.

Vincint Stefano scored on a header in front of the net 20 minutes into the match for Quartz Hill (22-3-1, 8-1-1). Shortly afterward, Marcus Jackson scored on a close-range shot to make it 2-0. Kyle Lympany assisted both goals on throw-ins.

Sophomore sweeper Zack Bursley and senior fullbacks Chuck Foster and Sherman Hess led a standout defensive effort for Quartz Hill.

Lancaster (13-3-2, 6-3-1), which ends league play in sole possession of second place, could have earned a share of the league title with a victory.

The Eagles scored their only goal on Jonathan Collins' penalty kick in the final minute.

--San Fernando 1, Kennedy 0: David Hernandez scored the winning goal seven minutes into the second half as the Tigers (7-2-1) clinched the Valley Mission League title with a victory over the visiting Cougars of Granada Hills in the season finale. Goalkeeper Edgar Rodriguez recorded one save to preserve the shutout.

--Sylmar 2, Reseda 0: Jose Lozano and Ernesto Lopez each had a goal to lead the Spartans over the visiting Regents (20-6-1, 6-3-1) in a Valley Mission League game.

Christian Pelayo, a junior who recently joined the team after being cleared on a transfer rule, had three saves en route to his third shutout in five games for the Spartans (12-10-2, 5-5.)

--Reseda 3, Sylmar 0: Mayra Lopez, Adriana Huerta and Adriana Brian each scored a goal for the host Regents (5-4-7, 1-2-7), who won their first Valley Mission League game of the season. Sylmar (0-9-1) remained winless in league.

--Viewpoint 5, Avalon 0: Melody Yazdanyar scored two goals and added an assist for the Patriots of Calabasas (12-7, 8-4) in the Liberty League victory.

--Canoga Park 2, Poly 0: After dropping their first two Sunset 6 League games, the Hunters (7-6-3, 6-2-2) defeated host Poly of Sun Valley to finish undefeated over the final eight games of the season. Kaylee Firestone scored both goals, her first two of the year, and Myriam Dimanche had eight saves to record the shutout.

In girls' water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in. :

--Alemany 8, Louisville 7: In a Mission League match, Jeanine Long and Molly Feeney each scored three goals for Alemany of Mission Hills (7-10, 3-5), which finished in third place in league and earned a spot in the Southern Section playoffs for the first time in school history.

Goalkeeper Megan Werner had 14 saves to preserve the victory for the Indians.
