DAY IN SPORTS: PITCHER SHINES FOR CHAMINADE.

Casey Haerther had nine strikeouts Tuesday in a four-hitter as the Chaminade High of West Hills baseball team defeated visiting St. Francis of La Canada 3-1 to maintain a share of first place in the Mission League.

Haerther (3-1), a sophomore right-hander, retired the side in order three times and struck out the side in the sixth inning.

St. Francis (10-7, 2-3) scored its only run in the fifth inning, when Brian Bistagne hit a single off the right-field fence to score Matt LaRussa from second.

Chaminade (13-6-1, 5-2) gave Haerther an early lead when Trevor Arroyo led off the first inning with his first home run of the season. Haerther drove in a run in the third, and Brendan Poole scored the Eagles' final run in the fourth after reaching on a grounder that went through the second baseman's legs.
