DAY IN SPORTS: NORTHRIDGE LOSES TO MONTANA ST.

Laura Szymanski of Cal State Northridge shared match-high honors with 22 kills in a losing effort Thursday night, as the visiting Matadors dropped a 7-15, 15-4, 15-11, 15-7 Big Sky Conference women's volleyball match to Montana State at Bozeman.

Alexis Cormier added 14 kills, Amanda Duncan 10 kills, Hedder Ilustre 18 digs and Heather Zall 12 digs for Northridge (4-4, 2-3).

Stephanie Laya led Montana State (12-4, 2-1) with 22 iklls and 13 digs. Teammate Mindy Nowak had a match-high 18 digs.

Dao leads Highlanders: Jasmin Dao of Granada Hills improved to 7-2 with an 8-0 No. 1 singles win over Cleveland's Cindy Yim as the No. 60-ranked Highlanders (4-0, 1-0) took a 7-1 West Valley League-opening girls' tennis win over the Cavaliers. Sisters Kelly and Tracy Takeshita and Yuka Otaka completed a singles sweep for Granada Hills.

In other girls' tennis:

Wolves win opener: Diana Friedland won 6-0 in No. 1 singles to lead Van Nuys (1-2, 1-0) past Reseda 6-1 in a Valley Mission League opener.

Tigers take showdown: Sabrina Warda of Kennedy edged San Fernando's Gladys Preciado 8-7 (8-6) in No. 1 singles in the closest match of the day, but San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

Burroughs wins: Dragana Organaska swept in No. 1 singles to lead the No. 8-ranked Indians, who edged crosstown rival Burbank 10-8 in Foothill League play. Burroughs improved to 6-0, 2-0, while Burbank fell to 5-2-1, 1-1.

Vikings romp: Julia Peek swept singles without yielding a point to lead Valencia (6-1, 1-1) past Saugus 18-0 in Foothill League play. Saugus dropped to 0-2 in league.

Borisoff paces Chargers: Brooke Borisoff swept at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 to lead No. 5-ranked Agoura (4-2, 2-1) to a 10-8 Marmonte league The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Grace holds lead: Moriah Kairouz had 11 kills and Samantha Womack 18 assists as Grace Brethren held first place in the Heritage League girls' volleyball standings with a 15-4, 15-4, 15-2 sweep of L.A. Lutheran, which dropped to 3-1 in league.

Cowboys off fast: Luke Llamas of Canyon took second place at 16:18 in the first Foothill League boys' cross country meet of the season to lead a first-place team showing by the Cowboys in six-team multiple dual meet competititon at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America. .
