``It just seemed like the right time,'' said Grady, 60, the 2003 State Coach of the Year. ``Toward the end of last season, it got to be a little harder on me. It was a tough decision, but I just felt like I needed a little more time to do things I haven't been able to do while I was coaching.''

Loyola (9-3) won the Serra League championship last season, the 16th league title in Grady's career, but lost to Lakewood in the second round of the playoffs. In 2003, the Lions made an improbable run to the Division I championship, upsetting heavily favored teams like Los Alamitos along the way.

``That was a magical run,'' said Grady, who also won a title in 1990.

According to sources, Loyola is likely to hire an in-house candidate. Grady said he will stay on as a teacher at the school.
