DAY IN SPORTS: LATE HEROICS LIFT LANCASTER, CANYON.Byline: Daily News The Lancaster High baseball team isn't relaxing this spring break. The Eagles (8-4) continued a successful vacation Monday beating Etiwanda 4-3 on the second day of the Arcadia High tournament. Lancaster built a 3-0 lead but allowed Etiwanda (7-6) to rally and tie the score in the sixth inning. Lancaster's Brett Jacobs broke the tie with a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Greer Grashaw (2 for 2, two walks). Jacobs finished 3 for 4 with a run scored. Jason Canning (2-0) earned the victory and he was unable to hold the lead in relief of starter Josh White. White left the game with a runner on second base and one out in the sixth inning, but the runner eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Lancaster, which beat Troy of Fullerton 9-3 in the tournament's opening round Saturday, plays Bell Gardens at 4 p.m. today. A victory will put Lancaster in the tournament's championship game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Arcadia High. IN OTHER BASEBALL Durango Tournament --Canyon 3, West Hills (San Diego) 1: C.J. Gurske hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Canyon a victory in the Durango tournament in Las Vegas. Anthony DiGiacomo (3-1) went the distance for the victory, allowing three hits and striking out three. Canyon (6-6) earlier lost to Cheyenne, Nev., 8-6 to open the tournament. Canyon's Matt McQueen struck out eight in four-plus innings in the loss. Babe Herman Tournament --Sonora 7, Harvard-Westlake 5: Harvard-Westlake of Studio City outhit Sonora of La Habra 9-8 and jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning, but it wasn't enough. Lex Marlow went 2 for 3, with a double and two RBI and teammates Gabe Cohen, Ben Soley and Jackson Kroopf each added two hits for Harvard-Westlake. Charles Lansbury (1-2) went the distance for Harvard-Westlake (7-6-1). Canyon of Anaheim tournament --Hart 4, Canyon Springs 0: Steve Sanchez struck out 10 and shut out Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley (11-3) in a Canyon of Anaheim tournament game. Shane Carlson was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI for Hart of Newhall (8-6). Canyon Springs outhit Hart seven to three, including Joe Spiers' 2-for-3 effort that improved his hitting streak to 46 games. |
