DAY IN SPORTS: HIGHLAND NO MATCH FOR SAUGUS.

Last season, Saugus edged Highland in the softball championship game of the High Desert Classic. This time around, it wasn't close.

Senior pitcher Ashley Arnett threw a complete-game shutout and recorded 10 strikeouts Monday as Saugus cruised to a 9-0 victory in a semifinal game at Lancaster Park.

--Hart 3, Quartz Hill 2 Quartz Hill of Lancaster committed two crucial errors in the top of the seventh inning that allowed Hart of Newhall to advance into the High Desert Classic championship game against defending tournament champion Saugus today.

Hart scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, and pitcher Stephanie Bronson held off a rally by Quartz Hill in the game's final inning.

Ginther, a senior right-hander, had four strikeouts and gave up just two hits - one in the fifth and the other in the seventh - in a complete-game effort.

Aaron Smith shot 76 for No. 2 Westlake (10-3), and Casey Piper shot 79 to lead No. 6 Simi Valley (6-2) in a three-way match that was also a first-place Marmonte League showdown for Westlake (5-0 in league) and Simi Valley (5-1 in league).
