DAY IN SPORTS: HARVARD-WESTLAKE ROLLS IN LEAGUE OPENER WOLVERINES MOVE TO 13-3.

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, the Daily News' top-ranked girls' basketball team, easily passed its first test of the season Thursday night, defeating 10th-ranked Chaminade 58-35 in a Mission League opener at Harvard-Westlake.

The Melissa Hearlihy-coached Wolverines (13-3, 1-0) jumped out to a 42-12 halftime lead and held the Eagles to just eight points in each of the final two quarters.

The Wolverines were led by Karina Siam's 14 points and Chantal Kazay's 10, while Christina Zdenek scored nine points for Chaminade.

In other girls' basketball:

--Fairfax tournament: Cleveland of Reseda defeated Kennedy of Granada Hills 48-35 in a second-round game. Brynne Steward (20 points, five steals) and Megan Okui (10 points) led the victorious Cavaliers (9-2). Jevay Grooms and Joeann Ball had 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cougars.

Also, Kelly Beckler scored 21 points and had seven steals and Kelly Patterson added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Granada Hills (8-5) in a 63-48 consolation-bracket victory over King Drew.

In boys' basketball:

--The hunted: In Canoga Park's final nonleague game, the Hunters were outscored by 16 points in the fourth quarter of a 96-74 loss to host Fremont.

Canoga Park's Cecil Brown, averaging 30 points a game, lit up the Pathfinders' defense for 37 and received praise from coach Ralph Turner for his all-around play.

``Brown is a Division I player,'' Turner said of the 6-foot-4 senior, who has received interest from Cal State Northridge, Fresno State and UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. . ``He plays within our system and leads us in in just about every category.''

Teammates Walter Burch and Donte Witherspoon added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Hunters (6-8).

In prep wrestling wrestling, sport in which two unarmed opponents grapple with one another. The object is to secure a fall, i.e., cause the opponent to lose balance and fall to the floor, and ultimately to pin the supine opponent's shoulders to the floor, through the use of body :
