DAY IN SPORTS: HART DOESN'T CARE HOW, JUST THAT IT QUALIFIED FOR PLAYOFFS.

Byline: Daily News

The Hart High of Newhall girls' tennis team was more than happy to make the Southern Section playoffs as a wild card.

``Hart can play tennis. There's no doubt about it,'' coach Steve Love said Tuesday after his team beat Buckley of Sherman Oaks 16-2 to advance to the first round of the Div. III tournament.

``It was a little easier than I expected,'' Love said. ``We have a good frame of mind right now. We came ready to play, and this victory will do something for our confidence.''

Hart will play at Prep League champion Mayfield of Pasadena on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Singles players Brittney Martin and Carolyn Horton won in straight sets and No. 2 Amy Davidson Amy Davidson (born September 15, 1979 in Phoenix, Arizona) is an American television actress who is best known for her role as Kerry Michelle Hennessy in 8 Simple Rules.  won two of her three sets as Hart (10-6) controlled the Buckley match from the outset.

``I like to think we're a balanced team,'' Love said, ``but if I had to choose a real strength, it's our doubles.''

The tandem has been one of the stronger teams in the region, having lost just once in its past 31 games.

The No. 2 doubles team of Kelly Weston and Shannon Doherty played well, winning its first match 6-2, then losing the second 4-6 to Buckley's No. 1 team of Laura Stein and Katy Lobel before closing out the day with 6-1 victory against the No. 3 team.

Even Irene Chen and Shilpa Kaul, both sophomores, won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 for Hart, which now turns its attention to Mayfield.
