DAY IN SPORTS: GIRLS' GOLF IMPROVES TO 21-0 AT SAUGUS.

Byline: Daily News

Visiting Saugus knocked defending City Section champion Granada Hills from the perfect-record ranks Thursday in an intersectional battle of undefeated teams, but Granada Hills coach Steve Thompson Steve Thompson or Steven Thompson may be:

  • Steve Thompson game developer and independent musician.
  • Steve Thompson, a football manager and former player.
came away happy with the big picture.

``I'm very pleased with what we did,'' he said after third-ranked Saugus (21-0) dropped No. 7 Granada Hills to 8-1 with a 261-273 victory in the nine-hole match at par-37 Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills.

``Our girls were a little disappointed we lost, but they understand what we're trying to do, and I think we did a really good job today,'' Thompson said.

Thompson, who hopes playing tougher teams during the season will help his Valley 1 League leaders in their City title defense next month, got another strong effort from sophomore Alyson Golditch (45) and junior Lucy Davies (47), but Saugus prevailed with better front-end scoring and depth.

Saugus sophomore Melanie De Leon, the Foothill League scoring leader through the first two league tournaments, was medalist at 40. Stephanie Aston, another sophomore, added a 51 for Saugus in the nine-hole match, which was played under the Southern Section's score-five system rather than the score-four City system.

In other girls' golf:

In the United States of America, Notre Dame  equaled or bettered personal bests as the Knights of Sherman Oaks (7-0, 7-0) held off No. 9 Chaminade of West Hills (5-3, 5-2) at par-37 Woodley Lakes GC to take a two-game lead in the Mission League race.

Notre Dame's Mayumi Kobayashi and Erinn Roundtree equaled their personal best of 39 to share medalist honors, and Ali Simpson (46), Laura Lee (50) and Monica Molloy (55) completed a school-record total. Nicole Mayo shot a team-best 40 for Chaminade.

``This is the most impressive effort I've ever been associated with, no matter what the sport,'' said Notre Dame coach Rob DiMuro, who also coached the Notre Dame boys' basketball team to the state tournament and coached Notre Dame girls' basketball to back-to-back appearances in the Southern Section semifinals. ``For all five to play that well with first place on the line is particularly satisfying.''

Notre Dame, which never has won a Mission League title in girls' golf, can clinch Clinch, river, c.300 mi (480 km) long, formed by the junction of two forks in SW Va., and flowing generally SW across E Tenn. to the Tennessee River at Kingston.  no worse than a title tie by winning one of its final three league matches.

--Hart 15, Saugus 3: Yasaman Sakhakorn's 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 singles provided the only points for Saugus (2-9, 1-5) as Hart of Newhall (9-2, 5-1) won at home to stay within a match of Foothill League-leading Valencia.
