DAY IN SPORTS: DEFENSE DOES IT FOR L.A. BAPTIST.

Byline: Daily News

Kristy Krohn's goal eight minutes into Friday's nonleague girls' soccer game proved to be all L.A. Baptist of North Hills would need. The Knights' defense did the rest, preserving a 1-0 victory over Maranatha of Arcadia.

Sweeper Tara Payon, stoppers Kristen Bradford and Stephanie Schultz and goalkeeper Sara Robinson, who had four saves, each played solidly en route to the fourth shutout of the season for L.A. Baptist (6-2-1).

``We've been working on ways to use Kristy in a number of different ways but the defense has been keeping us in most of our games,'' Knights coach Gino Devandry said.

In boys' soccer:

--St. Francis 4, Berkeley Prep (Fla.) 0: Dan Paladini scored two goals and had an assist for the Knights of La Canada in the consolation game of the Puma Invitational in Florida. Sean O'Connor and Chris Wereski combined on the shutout for St. Francis (8-0-3).
