DAY IN SPORTS: DAVIS LEADS CLEVELAND PAST MONROE.

Byline: Daily News

A brand new star. A deep bench. Size, rebounding and defense.

Those are the ingredients the Cleveland High boys' basketball team has used to win five of its first seven games, including Tuesday's 88-60 rout over Monroe in a nonleague game.

The new star is Anthony Davis Anthony Davis can refer to:

Davis, a transfer from Locke, is off to a spectacular start with the Cavaliers, averaging 21 points and 12 rebounds so far.

He was up to his usual tricks against the Vikings, scoring 10 of his 20 points in the decisive third quarter when Cleveland pulled away.

Davis is also providing tenacious defense - he's strong enough to guard post players and quick enough to stay with guards.

Cleveland is more then just Davis, though, as it proved against Monroe. The Cavaliers wore down the Vikings with their 9-man rotation, getting 22 points from Quenton Harvey and 12 rebounds and six assists from T.J. Stephens. Cleveland also forced 20 turnovers.

Pearson is averaging 28 points a game this year, but Notre Dame is proving to be more then a one-man team.

``It's the hardest working team since I've been coaching,'' said Notre Dame coach Rob Dimuro. ``It's a pleasure to work with these guys.''
