DAY IN SPORTS: DAO LOSES TENNIS FINAL.

Christine Dao lost in Wednesday's City Section Individual girls' tennis final but not before coming away with a profound knowledge of how it is competing against the likes of the top players in the state.

The Granada Hills High junior lost 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 to top-seeded Diane Matias of Carson in a 3 1/2-hour title match at the Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  Tennis Center after playing well throughout the week-long tournament.

The 16-year old defeated second-seeded Judith DeVera of Carson in the semifinals Tuesday 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. DeVera and Matias are ranked among the top 20 players in the state and both are being recruited by USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

In boys' basketball:

--Chaminade 67, North Bakersfield 48: Gerred Link scored 15 points, including five 3-pointers, and teammates Dion Cook and Marcus Everett combined for 26 points in the opening-round victory for Chaminade of West Hills (4-2) in the California Prep Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

--L.A. Baptist 4, Burbank 1: Ben Ellis scored twice and Jared Thornton added a goal and two assists for L.A. Baptist of North Hills (3-2-1), which advances to the consolation final of the La Canada tournament today at 4:30 p.m. against Pasadena.

--Thousand Oaks 8, Simi Valley 0: Kurtis Lindsey scored three goals and Jason Leopoldo and Miguel Morales each scored twice for Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.
