DAY IN SPORTS: CANYON STILL STRONG ENOUGH.

Though the Canyon High of Canyon Country cross country teams didn't run a typical lineup for the second Foothill League meet at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Saugus' Shannon Murakami didn't need a strong kick at the end, but she used it to win the girls race in 19:12, her second win in as many league meets. The run came five days after Murakami finished fourth at the Clovis Invitational in Fresno.

Canyon, though, used its depth to earn the team title. Freshman Brittany Jones was the Cowboys' top finisher (20:00).

--Muir 35, Glendale 6: Marcos Mejia rushed for 88 yards on 11 carries and accounted for host Glendale's only score in the league opener for both schools. Mejia scored on a 29-yard run on a fake field goal in the first quarter that cut the deficit to 7-6.

--Moorpark 10, Thousand Oaks 8:Junior Anna Karra held off Thousand Oaks' Mona Derentz 6-4 in the final set of the match to lift host Moorpark (9-2, 6-2) to an important victory at Arroyo Vista Community Park.

Karra's victory helped her team - which finished seventh in league last season - cap one of the biggest weeks in the program's history. Moorpark posted a 13-5 win over Westlake (5-6, 4-4) on Tuesday before outlasting Thousand Oaks (9-2, 6-2).
