LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. Elevations range from sea level to 8,831 feet.  -- Despite prime fire conditions forecast in Southern California's mountains, officials dared for the first time in nearly four weeks to show some confidence Friday they are gaining on the massive Day Fire.

The blaze, which has spewed heavy smoke over the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  and Antelope valleys since Sept. 4, was more than 63 percent contained, with a cautious prediction of full containment on Monday.

``Last night was the first time we heard they were projecting 100 percent containment,'' said Rod Torres of the Ventura County Fire Protection District. ``We were like, `Thank goodness.' We are ready to shut this one down.''

The 160,570-acre fire, mostly in Ventura County's Los Padres National Forest, spread little in recent days, though it did churn up Verb 1. churn up - cause aversion in; offend the moral sense of; "The pornographic pictures sickened us"

Crews, aided by dozens of bulldozers, managed Thursday to secure 34 miles of containment and worked Friday to remove brush along 19 more miles in hopes of getting a line around this fire.

Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is the federal agency responsible for coordinating emergency planning, preparedness, risk reduction, response, and recovery. The agency works closely with state and local governments by funding emergency programs and providing technical  has pledged money to help cover firefighting costs, which hit $57.5 million, and are sure to climb.

FEMA's Karen Ames said California's fire season is only beginning.

``The Day Fire is just another example of how this active wildfire season is far from over,'' Ames said in a statement. ``FEMA FEMA,

is here to make sure that California has the resources needed to fight this fire.''

Federal funding will help pay for firefighters' field camps such as one set up at Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi² , equipment, tools and mobilization.

Some residents of hamlets along the Ventura-Kern line remain under recommendations that they be prepared to evacuate.

What is stunning about this fire, which will be four weeks old on Monday, is that it has resulted in no injuries or significant losses.

A handful of unoccupied outbuildings was destroyed earlier in the week.

Extremely dry conditions continue, especially along ridgetops, throughout the fire area. The National Weather Service issued a red-flag warning through this evening, primarily because humidity was dipping below 10 percent.
