People are still reading. They just aren't reading books. They read their emails and they read their user manuals. They read their catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. B.C.  ads and they read their TV guides. They read when they have to. But it is a sign of our times that fewer and fewer people are reading books for fun, for entertainment, for the sheer pleasure of reading.
