DAVIS VOLLEYBALL FESTIVAL: LAGUNA BEACH TAKES TITLE WITH WIN OVER SPORTS SHACK LAGUNA BEACH 2, SPORTS SHACK 1.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

DAVIS Davis, city (1990 pop. 46,209), Yolo co., central Calif.; settled in the 1850s, inc. 1917. It is an education center with light industry; machinery, processed foods, and computer equipment are produced. The extensive Univ.  - Sports Shack must have felt Friday night like it had been there before, as it fell to No. 1 Laguna Beach Laguna Beach (ləg`nə), city (1990 pop. 23,170), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1887, inc. 1927.  23-25, 25-19, 15-12.

It was Shack's second loss to Laguna in as many days, but this time it was for the title of the 2002 Davis Festival.

Sports Shack's top 18-and-under volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  team walked onto the court at UC Davis as it had all week, with an unmistakable swagger. This was remarkable because only 24 hours before, it lost to Laguna Beach 24-26, 25-22, 15-12. But Thursday's match was close enough that Sports Shack liked its chances for Friday.

``Last night, we proved any team can win,'' said Courtney Schultz, a Stanford-bound Harvard-Westlake graduate, before the championship. ``We have to go out, play hard and see what happens.''

What happened was that No. 3 Sports Shack lost when it mattered. For the duration of the week, its swagger was justified. It dismantled dis·man·tle

sub-par teams by using a genuine team approach.

``We've been playing more aggressively this week than we have all year,'' said coach Tim Jensen Tim Jensen is a long-time collaborator with anime soundtrack producer/composer Yoko Kanno and her group The Seatbelts. He has worked with her on many soundtracks, including Cowboy Bebop, and Wolf's Rain. .

From Monday morning to Thursday night, Nevena Siljegovic's jump serves, Courtney Schultz' kills and Haley Jorgensborg's digs made Sports Shack look like it could beat a Division I women's team if it was given the chance.

But it wasn't enough for Sports Shack to overcome its Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  rivals, who used superior defense and stronger blocks to win.

Sports Shack beat Nike Northwest of Oregon Friday afternoon 25-22, 25-22, proving that the Greek goddess of victory wasn't watching over the team named after her, but instead was with Sports Shack.

With the win, Sports Shack earned another try at Laguna Beach in the championship game.
