 DAVID MATHEWS NAMED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
 OF SOUTHERN NATURAL GAS
 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- L. David Mathews has been promoted to executive vice president of Southern Natural Gas Company. William A. Smith, chairman and president of Southern Natural, made the announcement today.
 In his new position, Mathews will have responsibility for pipeline operations, engineering, gas operations, management information services, general services and aviation. He joined Southern Natural Gas in Birmingham as a cadet engineer in 1969 and progressed through various positions to assistant division superintendent of the eastern division in Columbus, Ga., in 1975; assistant superintendent-compressor department in Birmingham in 1978; superintendent of compressor stations in 1981; and general manager of transmission in 1985. He was promoted to assistant vice president-transmission in 1986 and to vice president-transmission in 1989.
 A native of Crawford, Ga., he earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He completed the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration Advanced Management Program.
 Southern Natural Gas, headquartered in Birmingham, operates an 8,600-mile natural gas pipeline system serving seven Southeastern states. It is a subsidiary of Sonat Inc. (NYSE: SNT), also headquartered in Birmingham. Sonat is a worldwide energy company involved in natural gas transmission and marketing, oil and gas exploration and production, and oil services.
