DAVID DONAHUE TO DRIVE HISTORIC PORSCHE 917-30 HIS FATHER DROVE TO CAN-AM TITLE 20 YEARS AGO

RENO, Nev., Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche Cars North America announced the following today:
The memory of the late, legendary race car driver Mark Donahue, as well as an equally legendary car he drove to the SCCA Can-Am championship, will be honored in a special ceremony during the 20th Annual Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Laguna Seca Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 22. At about 12:30 p.m., David Donahue, 26, Mark's youngest son who is also a professional race car driver, will drive the Porsche 917-30 in a ceremonial lap around the Northern California Laguna Seca track.
It will be the first time the younger Donahue has ever driven a car that his father raced, and it happens exactly 20 years after Mark Donahue piloted this same Porsche 917-30 to win six of eight races, including Laguna Seca, and capture the 1973 Can-Am series championship.
"It's a huge thrill to drive this car with its incredible history," said David Donahue. "I've had posters of it all over my walls at home for years, and I share the opinion of many people who regard the Porsche 917-30 as the best race car ever built."
The Porsche 917-30 will be flown from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, specifically for the weekend's activities, including a race for Can-Am cars built between 1966 and 1973, the last event on a two-day, 14-event schedule of races involving historic cars. Two-time World Sports Car Champion Hans Stuck, who is currently leading the IMSA Bridgestone Supercar Series drivers championship point total behind the wheel of a 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6, is scheduled to drive the celebrated 917-30 in Sunday's race.
In its day, the Porsche 917-30 was recognized as the most powerful road racing car in the world. Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 12-cylinder, air-cooled engine developing 1,100 h.p., the 917-30 was perhaps the most spectacular car in the history of the SCCA Can-Am Series. It is painted in the same blue and yellow Sunoco colors of Penske Racing as it was in 1973 when driven by Mark Donahue.
"Of course, it will be a very special and emotional experience for me, driving this great car on the 20th anniversary of my father's Can-Am championship," said David Donahue, who is currently driving in the same Supercar Series as Hans Stuck.
