Lindsay Davenport Lindsay Ann Davenport (born June 8 1976 in Palos Verdes, California) is a former World No. 1 American professional female tennis champion. She has won three Grand Slam singles tournaments: the 1998 U.S. Open, 1999 Wimbledon, and the 2000 Australian Open. , who says returning to her native Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  has been somewhat exhausting.

The distractions of playing near home and participating in her third California tournament in as many weeks had left the 25-year-old in a bit of a funk entering her opening match at the estyle.com Classic at the Manhattan Beach County Club.

Still, the third-seeded Davenport, a Laguna Beach Laguna Beach (ləg`nə), city (1990 pop. 23,170), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1887, inc. 1927.  resident, pulled it together just enough to beat Russian newcomer Nadia Petrova Nadia Petrova (pee-TROH-vuh; Russian:Надежда Петрова , Nadézhda Petróva  7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) in a second-round match that lasted 1 hour and 44 minutes Wednesday afternoon.

``I'm a little bit tired today, for whatever reason'' said Davenport, the tournament's second seed. ``Playing Stanford (Bank of the West), San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. ``Obviously I enjoy it (playing in California) more than dislike it. But you do have to space your time (with friends and family) out well here.''

The Golden State has served Davenport well during her eight-year pro career. She's won seven of her 33 career titles in California, including 1996 and 1998 wins at Manhattan Beach.

To win a third title, Davenport will need more consistency from her groundstrokes and service game. After going up a break on Petrova, Davenport gave it back with an unforced error and two double faults to even the first set at 4.

``I broke her and she broke me. That was pretty much it,'' Davenport said. ``There weren't a lot of breaks. I had to win it the hard way.''

The second set mirrored the first as Davenport went up a break before Petrova again tied it at 4 en route to the match's second tiebreaker. Davenport took advantage of six Petrova unforced errors and a match-ending double fault to once again dominate the tiebreaker.

``It seemed like she played a lot worse once we got to the tiebreaker,'' Davenport said.
