DUBLIN, Ohio, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Wendy's founder Dave Thomas, who "traveled the world" last year in an award-winning series of commercials for Wendy's, will be vacationing closer to home this summer. The new advertising, breaking this week, begin Wendy's two-month effort to promote the restaurants' Super Value Menu. With the themeline: "Wendy's, the best place to spend your summer," the campaign includes a national advertising campaign in June followed by a "Summer of 99" nationwide consumer sweepstakes in July.
"It's unbelievable that we've reached this 99th commercial milestone," said Thomas. "When I was first asked to appear in our commercials, I thought we would do one and that would be the end of it. After all, I'm not an actor, I'm a hamburger cook."
The national campaign includes two 30-second and one 15-second spots following Dave on his summer vacation travels. Towing a trailer behind his old-fashioned convertible, Dave writes home to daughter Wendy in "Vacation Dave I" about attempting such activities as fishing, cooking a hot dog and watching wind surfers. After burning the hot dog on an outdoor fire, Dave is happy to know there's a Wendy's nearby where he can choose from the nine items on the 99-cent Super Value Menu.
In "Vacation Dave II," Dave writes to Wendy about all the wonderful pictures he's taken. All photos happen to be of Wendy's restaurants. He tells Wendy about visiting a dolphin show and making new friends (a group of children) who he treats to items from Wendy's Super Value Menu. In the closing scene, Dave brags that he "broke 100" in golf with Dave seen at a miniature golf course.
All three commercials promote Wendy's popular Super Value Menu featuring nine items all priced at 99 cents everyday. "We've found that Wendy's Super Value Menu has strong appeal among parents dining with their children," said Charles Rath, executive vice president of marketing. "Summer is the perfect time to illustrate the benefits of a value-priced menu to families." The menu includes: Side Salad, Caesar Side Salad, Biggie Fries, Biggie Soft Drink, Junior Bacon Cheeseburger, Junior Cheeseburger Deluxe, Baked Potato, Chili and Frosty.
"Customers are able to create a meal out of Super Value Menu items such as a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger, Biggie Fries and Biggie soft drink," added Rath. "Or they can order a Super Value Menu item such as the Caesar Side Salad or Chili to complement their favorite sandwich.
"Wendy's Super Value Menu is successful because it's grounded in the fundamental concept which created the quick service industry: quality, low prices and fast service at convenient locations," said Rath.
"SUMMER OF 99" PROMOTION IN JULY
In July, Wendy's teams up with Coca-Cola to hold the "Summer of 99" sweepstakes offering 99 different prizes all associated with the number 99. Customers have a chance to win their favorite prize selected from among such items as a 1992 Jeep Cherokee, 99 minutes shopping on Rodeo Drive, 99 minutes with race car driver Kyle Petty, 99 pounds of lobster and 99 of the nine items on Wendy's Super Value Menu. Entry cards will be available by July 1 at participating Wendy's restaurants.
The "Summer of 99" sweepstakes will be supported with local TV and radio spots.
"Wendy's is the only place to spend you summer for great tasting, value-priced food and a chance to win one of 99 great prizes," added Rath.
Created by Backer Spielvogel Bates/New York, these latest commercials are part of the successful campaign featuring Dave Thomas which has raised Wendy's awareness to a level even higher than during the popular "Where's The Beef?" campaign.
Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers restaurants were founded in 1969 by R. David Thomas, who named the chain after one of his daughters. Wendy's the recognized quality leader(A) among national hamburger chains, has more than 3,800 restaurants and annual systemwide sales exceeding $3.2 billion.
