DAV recognizes World War II veterans in congress.

The DAV See WebDAV.  July 14 presented to each of 12 World War II veterans of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate a specially designed award containing a piece of granite from the National World War II Memorial The National World War II Memorial is a National Memorial to all Americans that served in the armed forces and on the home front during World War II. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  in recognition of their military service to our nation and their continuing service as members of Congress.

National Commander Alan W, Bowers told those members of Congress receiving the award that the "men and women we honor were young when they fought to preserve our heritage of freedom. And when it came time for them to return to civilian life, they continued to serve with distinction helping to create the America we have today."

"Today, there are 12 veterans of the Second World War who serve in the U.S. House and Senate," he said. "Nearly 60 years after the war's end War's End is a journalistic comic about the Bosnian War written by Joe Sacco. It contains two stories; the first, Christmas with Karadzic, about tracking down and meeting the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić, and the second, Soba , they are no longer young, but they continue to help safeguard our nation and carry in their hearts the spirit of America Spirit of America is the trademarked name used by Craig Breedlove for his land speed record-setting vehicles.

"During our 84 years, the DAV has achieved remarkable success on behalf of veterans while working with members of Congress and the White House," said Commander Bowers. "We have forged a vital partnership in which disabled veterans receive the benefits provided by a grateful nation. While World War II ended nearly 60 years ago, the health care requirements of those disabled during the war continue, and, in fact, increase due to their advanced age."

"Their health needs are significant, and they look to the democracy they defended to protect and honor them," Bowers said. "It is my hope that the one message you take away with you is that veterans must always be a national priority."
