But Garibay, 42, contends that the problems at home were misrepresented and offer no excuse for her daughter's behavior.

``For my family to say that this is why my daughter robbed a bank is ludicrous,'' she said. ``It truly had nothing to do with the bank robbery.''

The mother acknowledged that she had become romantically involved with her daughter's 21-year-old male friend. Tabetha had said she had a hard time dealing with it.

But Debbie Garibay said the news of her affair came weeks after the robbery.

``A lot of people have dealt with a lot and don't rob banks,'' she added. ``I'm tired of playing the heavy.''

Tabetha Hoult and her father, Joe Garibay, did not return a phone call Tuesday. Defense attorney Cornell Price also declined to comment, calling the matter ``a family affair.''

Debbie Garibay believes her daughter and Todd Hoult robbed the bank to quickly raise cash to pay six months' rent on an apartment where they hoped to live.

``I feel more bad for her husband because from the beginning he felt remorse,'' Debbie Garibay said.
