It is distinguished from the other economist positions by the broader scope of responsibility encompassing the .

The largest single employer is Los Angeles County, with 86,616 employees, according to the report. It was also the No. 1 employer in 1996, when the LAEDC LAEDC Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation
LAEDC Louisiana Economic Development Council
 last issued the survey.

Among businesses, the top employer is The Boeing Co. with 33,700 workers, displacing 1996's largest business, Bank of America

, which ranked 12 overall this year at 22,144.

``We find the overall number of employers in the area has stayed the same,'' Kyser said. ``It's just the roster of players has changed rather dramatically.''

For example, many companies that appeared near the top of the last report - Rockwell International Rockwell International was the ultimate incarnation of a series of companies under the sphere of influence of Willard Rockwell, who had made his fortune after the invention and successful launch of a new bearing system for truck axles in 1919. , McDonnell Douglas McDonnell Douglas was a major American aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor, producing a number of famous commercial and military aircraft. It merged with Boeing in 1997 to form The Boeing Company. , First Interstate Bancorp First Interstate Bancorp was a bank based in the United States that was taken over in 1996 by Wells Fargo. It was headquartered in Los Angeles.

International - have since been part of the mergers and acquisitions that have changed the local economy and are not on the latest list.

The report, conducted every two or three years, is used by city and county governments and by companies considering a move into the area and seeking a quick picture of the local economy, Kyser said.

Already, it's obvious the next report will have new faces. Bank of America parent BankAmerica Corp. and NationsBank agreed earlier this year to merge. Once the deal is complete, the BankAmerica name will disappear.

And Washington Mutual is ranked 53rd overall on this year's list, one place behind H.F. Ahmanson & Co. Once Washington Mutual completes its purchase of Ahmanson later this year, the combined company will have 12,102, putting it 27th overall.

Among industries, grocers and retailers dominate the list.

Ralphs Grocery Co., which controls the Ralphs, Food 4 Less and Hughes Family Markets chains, is the third largest business with 25,523 employees. Safeway Inc., which employs 20,459 people at its Vons and Pavilions chains, is the seventh largest business in the Southland. And at 10,600 employees, Stater stat·er 1

Among retailers, Sears, Roebuck and Co. ranked 14th with 20,150 employees; Dayton-Hudson Corp., the parent of Target and Mervyns department stores, was No. 18 with 15,953 workers; Robinsons-May ranked 22nd with 15,000 employees; and Wal-Mart's 14,011 employees pushed it to No. 24.

Kyser said that Wal-Mart's firm place in the list - it was also in the 1996 list, when it was 27th with 12,273 employees - is also surprising to many people.

``(People) just don't recognize that Wal-Mart is very aggressively moving into this market,'' Kyser said.

Locally, the Bentonville, Ark.-based discount department store chain has a store in Valencia and just opened its first urban store in Panorama City. In addition, Simi Valley has approved a shopping center slated to include a Wal-Mart.
