DATA RACE REVENUES FOR Q1 FY94 EXPECTED TO BE BELOW PREVIOUS YEAR'S REVENUES

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- DATA RACE(R) (NASDAQ: RACE) reports that revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 1994, ending Sept. 30, 1993, are expected to be approximately $7.5 million; below prior year's quarter revenue of $9.5 million. These disappointing results are due to reduced sales to traditional OEM customers such as Dell Computer Corporation and Tandy Corporation and to a shortfall in anticipated sales to PC distributors and dealers.
Dell has announced that they have temporarily suspended offering notebook computers until after the first of 1994. Tandy has sold substantially all of its computer operations to AST. Both of these companies are prospects for future business as they have been in the past. However, they are not currently purchasing any significant volume.
The company expects to report a modest operating loss for the first quarter, ending Sept. 30, 1993. The financial results for Q1 are scheduled for release during the third week of October.
"The sales to PC distributors and dealers have not increased as rapidly as we had expected, while orders from some OEM customers have declined," stated Herb Hensley, president/CEO of DATA RACE. "We expected the transition from OEM to PC distributors and dealers to take place much more smoothly than it has. International sales are also expected to be below internal projections for this quarter. However, we will ship more than 10,000 PCMCIA cards this quarter, and the newly introduced MACH DS plus is shipping at record levels."
