DATA RACE & SPECTRUM INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES CREATE A JOINT TECHNOLOGY LICENSING AND MANUFACTURING AGREEMENT

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Nov. 16 ~PRNewswire~ -- On the eve of COMDE X, the computer industry's giant trade show, Data Race (NASDAQ: RACE), a leading micro-modem manufacturer, and Spectrum Information Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPCL), the exclusive patent holder of interfaces linking PCs and cellular telephone technologies, have jointly announced a long- term agreement to expand their positions in the emerging Cellular Data and Fax communications market.
Under the agreement, Data Race will license Spectrum's patented technology for future modems which support the AXSYS and DIRECT cellular telephone interconnect devices made by Spectrum's subsidiary, Spectrum Cellular.
Also, under this agreement, Data Race will design and manufacture modems for Spectrum, as well as continuing to sell cellular-ready modems through Spectrum's subsidiaries, Computer Bay and Data One. Data Race currently manufactures cellular-ready modems sold by Spectrum subsidiaries for Compaq, Toshiba, and other notebook computers. Peter Caserta, president and CEO of Spectrum, commented that the combination of Spectrum's AXSYS and DIRECT interconnect products with Data Race modems have produced major accounts for Spectrum, such as Sysco, Johnson & Johnson, United Airlines and Pennzoil.
Data Race, with a licensing agreement recognizing Spectrum's patents, has agreed to supply cellular-ready modems to AT&T~NCR, Tandy~GRiD, and other manufacturers of notebook and pen-based computers. Data Race will also manufacture cellular-ready modems for IBM notebook computers, the Apple PowerBook notebook computer, and other portable computing devices.
The companies have also agreed to work together to develop new, more highly integrated, cellular Data~FAX communications devices. "These future products, incorporating the best in technology from both companies, will make wireless communication from portable computers even better," Herb Hensley, president and CEO of Data Race, said.
"We feel this agreement validates our belief in our AXSYS products and the patented technology that supports them," Caserta said. "We look forward to an exciting and mutually profitable relationship in this rapidly-growing market," he went on to say.
The parties have agreed, subject to the execution of a definitive license agreement, to dismiss with prejudice, the law suits that each have filed against the other.
