As in years past, we're learning that the schools take Dental Assistants dental assistant
n.
A person trained to assist a dentist with clinical and administrative procedures.
 Recognition Week very seriously as a group and make a great effort to develop programs and activities that highlight the profession.

This year, 18 schools shared with us their special promotions, and we present them here starting with the winning entries. And speaking of leaders, once again Michigan lead the way with winners at all levels of the Association category. "Dental Assistants are the Heart of Every Dental Office." This positive thought was put forward by Grand Rapids Grand Rapids, city (1990 pop. 189,126), seat of Kent co., SW central Mich., on the Grand River; inc. 1850. The second largest city in the state, it is a distribution, wholesale, and industrial center for an area that yields fruit, dairy products, farm produce,  DAS on mini-posters, tote bags and very prominently on the back of Grand Rapids city buses! A half-day seminar, "Changing Faces The trem Changing Faces can refer to:
  • Changing Faces (charity) - British charity which works in the area of disfigurement
  • Changing Faces (group) - a United States R&B duo
  • Bianlian - Chinese performance artist, whos name translates to Changing Face
 in the New Millennium kicked off DARW, and all attendees received a tote bag. Treasurer Connie McDonald, shown on front cover, demonstrates that you don't have to be boarding a bus to show off the DARW theme. Proceeds of the seminar will help to fund dental assisting scholarships.

Education highlighted DARW for Washtenaw with the week kicked off by past national president Mary Govoni (herself a Michigander) presenting a seminar on OSHA OSHA

Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a branch of the US Department of Labor responsible for establishing and enforcing safety and health standards in the workplace.

Attendees enjoyed warm soothing beverages in a winter themed meeting room and appropriate door prizes such as gloves, mittens and mugs for hot coffee. Individual recognition for attendees was made with certificates for each indicating the number of years they had been members of ADAA.

Toothbrushes and oral health instruction for developmentally delayed children up to the age of 6 was the focus of this local's efforts in honor of DARW. They supplied the Lynn Center with dental health care materials and members to give demonstrations and provide some fun stickers as well.

Everyone in this local received DARW lapel pins A lapel pin is a small pin often worn on the lapel of a dress jacket. Lapel pins can be purely ornamental or can indicate the wearer's affiliation with an organization or cause; for example, American Flag lapel pins became very popular in the United States, especially among  while the local itself centered its efforts on recruitment and welcoming new members by hosting a students' night celebration. Their motto: "RECRUIT: The Thing to Do in 2002!"

Radio and newspaper advertisements alerted folks in Stark County Stark County is the name of three US counties:

 to the fact that the DAS was sponsoring a blood drive in honor of DARW. Goody bags and medical kits were given to the 25 donors--8 of whom were dental team professionals. Leftover materials were donated to a women's shelter A Women's Shelter is a place of temporary refuge and support for women escaping violent situations, such as rape, and domestic violence. Having the ability to leave a situation of violence is valuable for women who are under attack because such situations frequently involve an .

Several WVDAA WVDAA Wey Valley Disabled Anglers Association  officers and students met with Governor Bob Wise for the signing and presentation of a declaration recognizing DARW in West Virginia West Virginia, E central state of the United States. A membership drive was also held with a $100 prize going to the member recruiting the most new members during March.

Outreach to the dental community was achieved by these dental assisting classes. Flyers were mailed by the students to all local dental offices offering the dentists an opportunity to purchase flowers and balloons for presentation to their staff during DARW. During the Week, dental program faculty honored the students with a pizza party and made all the students a DARW bookmark A stored location for quick retrieval at a later date. Web browsers provide bookmarks that contain the addresses (URLs) of favorite sites. Most electronic references, large text databases and help systems provide bookmarks that mark a location users want to revisit in the future. .

Local dental assistants in the Center's area got a pleasant surprise when 70 of them were presented with pink carnations and cards by the students in honor of DARW. This was a way to not only honor the assistants during their week but to call attention to the occasion for the benefit of their employers.... many of whom responded by hosting lunches. The class instructor in turn honored the students with the presentation of a DARW tote bag and catered breakfast, while the school did its part by displaying the DARW slogan on their marquee. A public service announcement was aired on community radio with the voice-over done by one of the dental assisting students.

Students prepared a library window display and the school rolled the DARW announcement on its rotating digital sign. At the student center, students handed out free toothpaste and floss (Free, Libre and Open Source Software) See free software and open source. , and Ms. Molar made an appearance. Meanwhile over at the dental clinic, the ever popular Ms. M greeted patients and passed out toothpaste. In the community, students made signs, and ribbons were given to dental assistants while dental health talks and oral care products were given to preschool and grade school children. Focusing on the dental community, the students hosted a booth in conjunction with NDDAA at the Fargo dental seminar and promoted DARW.
CARVER CAREER & TECHNICAL ED CENTER

A huge sign in a front hall display case greeted visitors and patients at Carver Career Center during DARW. Complete with American flag it measured over 10 ft long and 4 ft wide. An open house jointly honored DARW and the opening of the Center's Dental Clinic. All 22 dental assistants at Carver are proud members of ADAA!

Students e-mailed an announcement to area dentists from the school's web site. They did a follow up fax and even some hand deliveries of DARW notices to Albuquerque dental offices. A Spanish potluck dinner was held in celebration including students, case manager and staff. To call attention to DARW publicly, students presented an Institute mug filled with toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste to a local television station which acknowledges these contributions.

A preschool class was invited to visit this school's classroom and students made a presentation concerning brushing and nutrition. Volunteers were invited to have pictures taken with the intra oral camera.
COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN IDAHO

March Fourth was celebrated by students at Southern Idaho Southern Idaho is a generic geographical term roughly analogous with the areas of the U.S. state of Idaho located in the Mountain Time Zone. It particularly refers to the combined areas of the Boise metropolitan area, the Magic Valley and Eastern Idaho.  who made baskets of oral care products for all the babies born on March 4 (and for their parents) at local hospitals ... these efforts earned them photos and a write up in a local newspaper. On March 5, the students were surprised with a luncheon hosted by the faculty. During March, school children were invited to visit the lab on campus where students explained oral health procedures and made presentations. These students also participated in a Science Trek project featuring the mixing process of the many dental materials encountered. All Southern Idaho students are ADAA members.

THE INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH EDUCATION

Dental assisting students wore ribbons honoring dental assistants during their week and even asked other students and faculty to join them. They sponsored a three-mile walk-a-thon benefiting their local fire department and raised $600.

Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need.  in honor of DARW. Students solicited donations from local merchants and restaurants to fund the kits and held a silent auction to raise money. In addition to the kits, a cash donation was made which will assist clients of the shelters to purchase bus tokens and other necessities.

More publicly, the class made up brochures and posters concerning various aspects of oral health maintenance and visited retirement homes to distribute denture denture, artificial replacement for natural teeth and surrounding tissue. Dentures are classified as partial or complete. The former are removable and maintained by clasps, or are fixed bridges with crowns cemented over adjacent teeth or over spikes embedded in the  and regular tooth brushes.

7th Dental Squadron kicked off the week with a complimentary breakfast for the entire dental staff at which a proclamation from the Governor of Ohio was presented and a letter of congratulations from the Air Force Assistant Surgeon General The U.S. Surgeon General is charged with the protection and advancement of health in the United States. During the week, a dinner and luncheon were held as well as a bowling party which included spouses. Dinner entertainment included the "Dentist/Assistant Game" a variation on the newlywed game.

A generous shopping spree was funded by Broadway South with each assistant receiving $150 for shopping at Park Meadows Mall Meadows Mall is located at 4300 Meadows Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada. Meadows Mall is owned by the General Growth Properties Inc. It is a two story enclosed mall with approx. 960,000 ft² of space. The mall has 140 stores and 4 anchors. . The assault on the retail facility was followed by lunch in the mall.

A huge picnic for nearly 400 dental personnel was given to kick off DARW, and the dental squadron commander presented ten dental reservists with a complimentary squadron shirt. Traditional picnic games were held following the food and presentations.

Flyers were placed around the dental clinic recognizing DARW, and each assistant received a bouquet at a luncheon provided for them. Ms. Stallings emphasizes, however, that the assistants are appreciated and recognized all year long at this naval clinic.
