Recognition Week very seriously as a group and make a great effort to develop programs and activities that highlight the profession. This year, 18 schools shared with us their special promotions, and we present them here starting with the winning entries. And speaking of leaders, once again Michigan lead the way with winners at all levels of the Association category. SECOND PLACE WASHTENAW DISTRICT DAS Dexter, MI Presented by Gwen Graham-Feldkamp, CDA, RDA Education highlighted DARW for Washtenaw with the week kicked off by past national president Mary Govoni (herself a Michigander) presenting a seminar on OSHA OSHA n. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a branch of the US Department of Labor responsible for establishing and enforcing safety and health standards in the workplace. standards at a session called "Warm up with Washtenaw". Attendees enjoyed warm soothing beverages in a winter themed meeting room and appropriate door prizes such as gloves, mittens and mugs for hot coffee. These efforts helped to build recognition of the week itself and of ADAA to fellow dental assisting professionals. ALSO NOTED AKRON DAS Akron, OH Presented by Kimberly Arny, CDA On the busiest bulletin board in Talmadge County, this local, with the mayor's help, posted the DARW message and reached an estimated 44,000 cars every day ... that computes to almost 400,000 people. DIABLO DAS Concord, CA Presented by Shari Baker Toothbrushes and oral health instruction for developmentally delayed children up to the age of 6 was the focus of this local's efforts in honor of DARW. They supplied the Lynn Center with dental health care materials and members to give demonstrations and provide some fun stickers as well. GENESEE DISTRICT DAS Millington, MI Presented by Deborah Jaruzel, CDA, RDA Everyone in this local received DARW lapel pins A lapel pin is a small pin often worn on the lapel of a dress jacket. DENTAL ASSISTING SCHOOLS FIRST PLACE OZARK TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE Springfield, MO Presented by Janet Sell Outreach to the dental community was achieved by these dental assisting classes. Flyers were mailed by the students to all local dental offices offering the dentists an opportunity to purchase flowers and balloons for presentation to their staff during DARW. During the Week, dental program faculty honored the students with a pizza party and made all the students a DARW bookmark A stored location for quick retrieval at a later date. Web browsers provide bookmarks that contain the addresses (URLs) of favorite sites. Most electronic references, large text databases and help systems provide bookmarks that mark a location users want to revisit in the future. . SECOND PLACE MERCER COUNTY TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER Princeton, WV Presented by Bertha Robertson CDA, RDA Local dental assistants in the Center's area got a pleasant surprise when 70 of them were presented with pink carnations and cards by the students in honor of DARW. This was a way to not only honor the assistants during their week but to call attention to the occasion for the benefit of their employers.... many of whom responded by hosting lunches. The class instructor in turn honored the students with the presentation of a DARW tote bag and catered breakfast, while the school did its part by displaying the DARW slogan on their marquee. A public service announcement was aired on community radio with the voice-over done by one of the dental assisting students. HONORABLE MENTIONS NORTH DAKOTA STATE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE Wahpeton, ND Presented by Lucinda Johnson Students prepared a library window display and the school rolled the DARW announcement on its rotating digital sign. At the student center, students handed out free toothpaste and floss (Free, Libre and Open Source Software) See free software and open source. , and Ms. Molar made an appearance. Meanwhile over at the dental clinic, the ever popular Ms. M greeted patients and passed out toothpaste. In the community, students made signs, and ribbons were given to dental assistants while dental health talks and oral care products were given to preschool and grade school children. Focusing on the dental community, the students hosted a booth in conjunction with NDDAA at the Fargo dental seminar and promoted DARW. CARVER CAREER & TECHNICAL ED CENTER Charleston, WV Presented by Debra B. Sampson, CDA A huge sign in a front hall display case greeted visitors and patients at Carver Career Center during DARW. Complete with American flag it measured over 10 ft long and 4 ft wide. An open house jointly honored DARW and the opening of the Center's Dental Clinic. All 22 dental assistants at Carver are proud members of ADAA! ALSO NOTED ALBUQUERQUE TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE Albuquerque, NM Presented by Bernadette Jojola, CDA Students e-mailed an announcement to area dentists from the school's web site. They did a follow up fax and even some hand deliveries of DARW notices to Albuquerque dental offices. A Spanish potluck dinner was held in celebration including students, case manager and staff. To call attention to DARW publicly, students presented an Institute mug filled with toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste to a local television station which acknowledges these contributions. CAPE MAY COUNTY TECHNICAL SCHOOL Cape May Court House, NJ Presented by Candida J. Ditzler, CDA, RDA A preschool class was invited to visit this school's classroom and students made a presentation concerning brushing and nutrition. Volunteers were invited to have pictures taken with the intra oral camera. COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN IDAHO Twin Falls, ID Presented by Tonja Bowcut, CDA March Fourth was celebrated by students at Southern Idaho Southern Idaho is a generic geographical term roughly analogous with the areas of the U.S. state of Idaho located in the Mountain Time Zone. It particularly refers to the combined areas of the Boise metropolitan area, the Magic Valley and Eastern Idaho. who made baskets of oral care products for all the babies born on March 4 (and for their parents) at local hospitals ... these efforts earned them photos and a write up in a local newspaper. On March 5, the students were surprised with a luncheon hosted by the faculty. During March, school children were invited to visit the lab on campus where students explained oral health procedures and made presentations. These students also participated in a Science Trek project featuring the mixing process of the many dental materials encountered. All Southern Idaho students are ADAA members. CST COMMUNITY COLLEGE Chattanooga, TN Presented by Karen Castleberry Third and fourth year high school students were treated to dental assisting career presentations by the d.a. students of CST CST abbr. 1. ELI WHITNEY VOC TECH Hamden, CT Presented by Janice R McMorran The dental assisting program at Eli Whitney celebrated its 40th year during DARW and a banquet was held to commemorate the event. Attendees received a tote bag and mug. THE INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH EDUCATION Fairfield, NJ Dental assisting students wore ribbons honoring dental assistants during their week and even asked other students and faculty to join them. They sponsored a three-mile walk-a-thon benefiting their local fire department and raised $600. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. in honor of DARW. Students solicited donations from local merchants and restaurants to fund the kits and held a silent auction to raise money. In addition to the kits, a cash donation was made which will assist clients of the shelters to purchase bus tokens and other necessities. Western Piedmont's 20 dental assisting students were joined by hygiene students, county health departments and local dentists to provide care for 100 children. YORK TECHNICAL COLLEGE Rock Hill, SC Presented by Wanda C. Hayes, CDA, RDH Career presentations and oral health care demonstrations were provided by York's d.a. students at local schools and a college health fair. At a luncheon for students hosted by faculty, a proclamation from the Governor was read and everyone received a rose and a pen. Meadows Mall is owned by the General Growth Properties Inc. It is a two story enclosed mall with approx. 960,000 ft² of space. The mall has 140 stores and 4 anchors. . DENTAL CLINIC Little Rock AFB, AR Presented by Barbara King A banner, balloons and pictures of the 20 dental assistants at this base honored DARW, and the assistants themselves were treated to lunch, pens and fun gifts including tickets to base events and eateries. DENTAL CLINIC McConnell AFB, KS Presented by Maj. Mark R. Henderson The 26 dental assistants at this base were treated to lunch and a laudatory laud·a·to·ry adj. Traditional picnic games were held following the food and presentations. OCEANA DENTAL CLINIC Naval Air Station Virginia Beach, VA Presented by LonVondee Stallings Flyers were placed around the dental clinic recognizing DARW, and each assistant received a bouquet at a luncheon provided for them. Ms. Stallings emphasizes, however, that the assistants are appreciated and recognized all year long at this naval clinic. 10TH DENTAL SQUADRON, LOCATION A Peterson AFB, CO Presented by M/Sgt Allen P. Garcia Two local papers provided coverage of DARW and highlighted contributions made by the 28 assistants at this base. A cookout and bowling party hosted by dental providers for the assistants was also held during DARW.
