DARPA Selects PTC for Next Generation 3D Integrated Circuit Research Project; PLM Expertise in Electronics & High Tech Leads to Selection for Design Management.NEEDHAM, Mass. -- PTC (PTC, Needham, MA, www.ptc.com) Long a world leader in mechanical computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering software, PTC, through acquisitions and reorganization, has transformed itself into a leading provider of Internet-based B2B solutions for discrete manufacturers. (Nasdaq: PMTC PMTC Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (of HIV/AIDS) PMTC Pacific Missile Test Center PMTC Professional Multimedia Test Center ), the Product Development Company(TM), today announced that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), U.S. government agency administered by the Department of Defense (see Defense, United States Department of). (DARPA DARPA: see Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) The name given to the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency during the 1980s. It was later renamed back to ARPA. ), the central research and development organization for the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. Department of Defense, has selected PTC as the prime contractor for a research project to deliver 3-Dimensional Integrated Circuit integrated circuit (IC), electronic circuit built on a semiconductor substrate, usually one of single-crystal silicon. The circuit, often called a chip, is packaged in a hermetically sealed case or a nonhermetic plastic capsule, with leads extending from it for (3D IC) design management capabilities. PTC will use the proceeds from this funded research project to enhance Windchill(R), Pro/ENGINEER(R), and InterComm(TM). DARPA plans to use these solutions along with other advanced IC solutions to dramatically improve the performance of next-generation military electronics. Key to DARPA's decision was PTC's strong history of working with commercial and military electronics companies to improve their product development processes by producing higher quality, lower cost products that can be delivered in a shorter timeframe. As part of this multi-million dollar, multi-year funded research project, PTC has sub-contracted with Raytheon and North Carolina State University History
--Product development process management and design collaboration solutions developed with Windchill. --Mechanical and thermal analysis Thermal analysis is a branch of materials science where the properties of materials are studied as they change with temperature. Techniques include:
--Information extraction and visualization with InterComm --Integration to third-party design and analysis applications through Windchill As subcontractors to the deal, North Carolina State University will offer innovative IC design technology expertise and Raytheon will provide key end user perspective and testing. Collectively, DARPA's goal is to create the manufacturing capabilities and design framework to develop advanced, high-performance 3D IC's. "PTC will provide DARPA and the electronics industry with an innovative Product Lifecycle Management (PLM (Product Life cycle Management) A comprehensive information system that coordinates all aspects of a product from initial concept to its eventual retirement. Sometimes called the "digital backbone" of a product, it includes the requirements phase, analysis and design ) solution that will manage the overall design process for greater first-pass product development success for integrated circuits," said Greg Creech, Design Team Leader for the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 8,023 acres (3,247 hectares), W Ohio, NE of Dayton; est. 1917. One of the largest airport installations in the world, it is the air force's main research and development base, and the headquarters of the , the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR COTR College of the Rockies (Canada) COTR Contracting Officer's Technical Representative COTR Church on the Rock COTR Children of the Revolution COTR Centro Operativo de Tecnologia de Regadio (Portugal) ) for the project. "We are confident that PTC will be key to the success of this overall project by managing the flow of information between design disciplines and their respective design and analysis tools." "Sharing data and collaborating across the many design disciplines that need to interact to develop and manufacture a 3D IC is a highly complex process," said Chad Hawkinson, director, electronics & high tech product & market strategy, PTC. "This is a very exciting project because Windchill will be instrumental in addressing the industry's need for improved product development collaboration and process management, ultimately providing these companies with future advancements in their technology solutions."
