Catherine McGowen talked to her.

Were you afraid when racing in rough weather? If you had asked me before this event I would have said yes, but the rough seas were part of the adventure and certainly got the adrenaline adrenaline (ədrĕn`əlĭn, –lēn): see epinephrine.  going. I was at the helm during the roughest part of the race and for me that was the most exciting part.

Was it difficult, especially since you had no previous experience? It was challenging! There was a lot to take in on the training, but we had a brilliant skipper skipper: see butterfly.

How much money were you able to raise? We are fundraising up until January. So far between the five of us we have raised about pounds 3,500, but we are hoping to exceed this.

Would you do it again? I would absolutely do it again. I am considering pursuing further levels of training with the Royal Yachting association The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the national governing body for watersports in the United Kingdom. Its involvement includes;
  • Sailing
  • Windsurfing
  • Motor cruising
  • Sportsboats
  • Personal watercraft
  • Powerboat racing

 a challenge that will beat her last fundraising trek up Kilimanjaro. I sincerely hope that anyone who has heard or read my story will be inspired to do something for charity.

What is your best memory of the race? There are so many memorable moments. It was great that my friends were there to support me especially when they knew how much this meant to me. I think the best memory was when we had finished and we made a toast to Poppy, my daughter. It just put everything we had done that day into context.

Can you describe how your daughter has inspired you? My daughter is a constant inspiration to me. But what inspires me most is how her tiny little life, against all the odds, has been able to bring awareness and hope to others that have been in a similar situation. She is very proud of what I have done.

Were the other boats racing for the same charity? All of the boats raced for Action Medical Research, a charity which is dedicated to improving the health of babies and children.
