DARCY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT; COUNCIL TERM ENDS IN 2002.

Byline: Angela M. Lemire Staff Writer

Jo Anne Darcy is winding down.

The three-time city mayor, 12-year councilwoman and senior field deputy for county Supervisor Michael D. And her current four-year City Council term that expires in 2002 will be her last, Darcy said, noting that she will not seek a consecutive mayoral run when the council reorganizes its leadership Tuesday night.

``It would have to be something very unusual and special to make me stay in the public light after that,'' said Darcy, 68, whose involvement in politics, civic and nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

She added, ``If I do come back to do anything in a few years, it might be in some part-time job for the county, but that'd be it.''

``When I was first elected, one of my commitments was to appoint field deputies who really knew their communities and could represent their needs,'' Antonovich said Tuesday. ``She's going to be sorely sore·ly

``It got to the point where my son broke his back and I had to juggle everything just to be able to see him at the hospital,'' said Darcy, who rises before dawn each day and often returns home near midnight. ``I have plenty of energy - that's not a problem at all - and I'm healthy. But you start to ask yourself, `How much longer can I do this?' ''

``I have another great-grandchild on the way and I want to be able to spend more time with (family,) more than just the holidays,'' she said.

``I also want to clean out my garage - finally - and have my house painted. Those are things you just never seem to find time to do,'' Darcy said.
