The U.S. Display Consortium (USDC An abbreviation for U.S. District Court. ) today outlined its lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  of events for the upcoming Display Application Conference (DAPPCON).

The conference, geared for designers and integrators of flat panel displays A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  (FPDs), will highlight companies defining a significant market niche in the digital, wireless age -- a trend that is driving displays away from their traditional role as device components toward becoming end products. DAPPCON, co-located with Display Works 2000, will be held Jan. 31 - Feb. 4 at the San Jose Convention Center.

 USDC President Michael Ciesinski, 80 percent of the information a person receives today is processed visually. Considering that information is viewed two ways, on paper or increasingly via a display screen, there is tremendous growth potential in the display market. Many companies, including U.S.-based display companies, are actively creating new markets in this arena and contributing to the high-tech boom economy.

DAPPCON will feature several forums that will address these trends, including:
    A one-day business conference on Feb. 1 sponsored by USDC, with
     "The Visual Communications Revolution" as its theme, will focus
     on the latest display business trends. The conference will
     incorporate representatives from all tiers of the industry,
     including display manufacturers, equipment and materials
     suppliers, integrators and software designers. Industry
     luminaries from AT&T, Intel, Three-Five Systems, In-Focus,
     Displaytech, FED Corp., and Philips Flat Display Systems, as well
     as a financial analyst from Needham & Co., are scheduled to
     present;

    A USDC press conference -- held in cooperation with Stanford
     Resources on Feb. 2, the first day of DAPPCON and Display Works
     exhibits -- will provide an overview of display applications and
     market growth. The press conference features a briefing on OLEDs
     by FED Corp., highlights of the mobile phone display market from
     Three-Five Systems and a preview by ABRe Consulting on the SEMI
     Japan Production Cost Savings III Report, which will be released
     during DAPPCON's Manufacturing Technology Workshop on Feb. 3. In
     addition, USDC will announce several new research contract
     awards;

    A USDC-sponsored technology roundtable on Feb. 2 will provide
     industry press and market analysts with a forum for gathering
     additional information on the day's proceedings. Leading
     technologists from Applied Komatsu Technologies, DuPont, Kyocera
     and USDC are scheduled to participate. Press and analysts are
     invited to discuss improvements in FPD equipment technology, new
     display materials, advancements in LCD technology and recent USDC
     programs; and
