DANKA BUYS JAPANESE FAX OPERATION

 DANKA BUYS JAPANESE FAX OPERATION
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Danka Business Systems,

PLC, the nation's second largest independent copier and fax machine dealer, announced yesterday it has acquired the U.S. facsimile operation of Fujitsu Ltd.
The acquisition will add about $50 million a year in sales to Danka, which reported sales of $199 million in fiscal 1992.
Danka will add close to 180 employees to its current work force of approximately 1,800.
"It's unusual in this day for an American company to buy a Japanese operation," said Danka's president Dan Doyle. "But we see potential where the Japanese don't."
Fujitsu had announced in March that it was shutting down its U.S. facsimile business. It said markets in the U.S. were too competitive. It also said it would lay off about 350 people.
"We're glad to save these jobs -- American jobs," said Doyle.
Danka said that its purchase of Fujitsu's facsimile assets includes the dex(R) brand name in the United States and Canada, which will form the basis of its subsidiary's new name, DEX Business Systems, Inc. Danka has been a dealer of Fujitsu facsimile products since 1986.
Acting chairman of Fujitsu Imaging Systems (FISA), Arthur J. Gemmell, said that the transaction was made, in part, due to the "wonderful dealer supplier relationship over the years. We're pleased that most of our employees will have the opportunity to become part of the Danka family of companies.
Doyle said that DEX Business Systems, Inc. will continue to support FISA's current facsimile customer base.
As for the remaining FISA businesses and employees not included in the transaction, Gemmel said that FISA will continue to wind down its business activities. Employees at FISA's Danbury headquarters and field sales offices who are not hired by Danka, will, at the time they leave FISA, receive severance packages commensurate with company policy.
FISA is a subsidiary of Fujitsu America, Inc., which is the largest subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited, Inc., the world's second largest computer company and the world leader in communications and microelectronics.
