LETTUCE sold in the UK had pesticide levels 22 times the safe limit for young children, scientists revealed yesterday.

They also found potato with amounts dangerous for four to six-year-olds.

Most fruit and veg tested had safe levels of pesticide. But an apple, avocado, fennel fennel, common name for several perennial herbs, genus Foeniculum vulgare of the family Umbelliferae (parsley family), related to dill. The strawlike foliage and the seeds are licorice-scented and are used (especially in Italian cooking) for flavoring. , grapes and raspberries also had too much. Dr Ian Brown, of the Pesticide Residues Committee which ran the study, said: "This is unacceptable and we are contacting the suppliers where exceedances were found."

Friends of the Earth called on the Government to bring in a pesticides tax.
