Valdes's main objective, however, is not to increase the number of Olympic hopefuls, but to expose the general public to DanceSport and, she hopes, to win its attention and support. For the September 18 event, the top twelve international couples (each is ranked first in its country) will compete against one another, as will the top six theater-arts couples from the United States and five junior couples (ages twelve to thirteen years old). A "club sport competition," whose participants were chosen this summer through dance club promotions, will consist of swing, hustle hus·tle v. hus·tled, hus·tling, hus·tles v.tr. 1. DanceSport can most easily be compared with ice dancing ice dancing, ice-skating competition in which couples are required to perform dance routines to music. The dancers at Madison Square Garden will be competing in the Latin style, one of the two styles performed in international competitions; American competitions have different requirements.
