. DanceSport, both a competitive performing sport and an "industry," has been around for decades, but a recent resurgence of interest can be attributed to its designation as a new Olympic medal event (there's still plenty of time to practice, though--due to International Olympic Committee “IOC” redirects here. Valdes's main objective, however, is not to increase the number of Olympic hopefuls, but to expose the general public to DanceSport and, she hopes, to win its attention and support. "Right now, in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , there are [partner] dance competitions every weekend," she says. "But the general public doesn't really know what [competitive partner dance] is, and the couples don't really get the exposure that is needed.... In other competitions, they might bring two to three couples; nowhere in the U.S. is there a major competition, meant really for the general public, to show DanceSport in its most fabulous form." For the September 18 event, the top twelve international couples (each is ranked first in its country) will compete against one another, as will the top six theater-arts couples from the United States and five junior couples (ages twelve to thirteen years old). A "club sport competition," whose participants were chosen this summer through dance club promotions, will consist of swing, hustle hus·tle

DanceSport can most easily be compared with ice dancing ice dancing, ice-skating competition in which couples are required to perform dance routines to music.
