DANCER CARRIES ON ANCIENT ART FORM.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Daily News Staff Writer

Through a slight movement of her hands, arms, legs and feet, 10-year-old Anita Suri can tell stories of India as she transforms herself into a horse, a rose or the sun.

Her stories are told through a form of dance called bharatanatyam, classical performances where precise movements of the body follow the rhythmic pattern Noun 1. rhythmic pattern - (prosody) a system of versification

``All the dances are related with the gods,'' said Neena Suri, Anita's mother. ``They are worship dances where the dancer is dedicating her body and her mind toward God.''

The dance form, which is now presented throughout the world, became famous thousands of years ago in Southern India as religious devotees making offerings to God.

Bharatanatyam also relate India's rich mythological stories, in which dancers use many emotions to fully demonstrate their tales.

``When I was young I would turn on the tapes and just start dancing,'' said Anita, who began dancing at age 2-1/2 and began performing at age 4. ``Dancing is in my blood.''

Anita Suri began learning the bharatanatyam when her family moved to Southern India for one year. Since moving back to the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

``It takes a lot of work and a lot of practice,'' Anita said. ``But it's really fun.''
