DALY DIDN'T WIN SKINS, BUT WON FANS : HERE'S THE SKINNY.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Daily News Staff Writer

But for two missed, makeable birdie putts Sunday, struggling and skinless John Daly John Daly is the name of:
  • John Charles Daly, veteran radio & TV newsman and television host on What's My Line?
  • John Daly (athlete), a British athlete who won an Olympic silver medal.
  • John Daly (golfer), a professional golfer on the PGA Tour.
might have been this year's Skins Game champion.

He nearly took the lead on No. 15 with an eight-footer that could have pressured Fred Couples' eventual $240,000 winner from seven feet.

Then, on No. 18, Daly barely missed a 10-footer that could have won him $120,000.

But nobody came to see Daly putt, except maybe Daly. The two-day crowd of 15,000 was lured in large part by the prospect of the driving showdown between Daly - the PGA's reigning long-ball king - and Tiger Woods Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled. , new boomer in town and heir apparent heir apparent n. the person who is expected to receive a share of the estate of a family member if he/she lives longer, or is not specifically disinherited by will. Was Rancho La Quinta big enough for both of them?

Daly played that theme up to the delight of a capacity crowd crammed around the driving range Saturday morning.

With Woods, Couples and Tom Watson already hitting on the practice range, Daly strode through the surrounding gallery to join them, face locked in full mock-snarl.

Like the town baddie, he first knocked over Watson's bag, then scattered a stack of balls as his opponents grinned and fans cheered wildly.

He might have wound up winless, but Daly was a big hit on the course and in the gallery.

: Watson would like credit for helping Couples read his decisive, seven-skin putt Sunday.

``He told me he thought left edge and asked me what I thought,'' related Watson the helpful. ``I said, `Maybe.' ''

Couples said he didn't engage in much needling.

``I can't imagine anything I would say that would shake Tom Watson,'' Couples explained. ``I'm afraid John Daly will beat me up if I say anything to him. I have another 10 years with Tiger, so I'm going to leave him alone for now.''

Lootmobiles: Skins Game 1-2 finishers Couples and Watson won not only a combined $500,000 over the weekend but also something to drive the money to the bank.

Watson's birdie on No. 8 Saturday earned him a Toyota Paseo The Toyota Paseo (known as the Cynos in Japan and other regions) was released in 1991 and was loosely based on the Toyota Tercel. High rookie standards: Woods won $40,000 in this, his first Skins Game but finished well shy of the record for a first-time participant.

put that record way up there in 1988, when he earned $290,000 - $10,000 more than Couples took home Sunday, when Couples became the Skins Game's first back-to-back champion.

Putt, me worry? Couples' winning putt on No. 15 marked the second straight year he has won the Skins Game on a seven-skins birdie.

He worked five extra holes last year before sinking a 10-foot birdie putt worth another seven skins and a Skins Game-record $270,000.

, but it was enough to place him first after three straight runner-up finishes.

Worthy causes: With 20 percent of each player's winnings going to the charity of his choice, the $540,000 Skins Game purse produced $108,000 for good causes.
