DAILY VARIETY -- SLEEK SHEET SHOCKS SHOWBIZ

DAILY VARIETY -- SLEEK SHEET SHOCKS SHOWBIZ
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Daily Variety, the leading

daily entertainment trade paper, is on the street today with a new design that is easier to read and more appealing. Behind the scenes in its Los Angeles headquarters, the daily is also up and running with a state-of-the-art electronic newsroom system.
The announcement of the redesign of the paper, which has been a daily must-read for everyone in Hollywood since its founding in 1933, was made by Neil Perlman, senior vice president/group publisher for the Entertainment Group of Cahners Publishing Company, and Peter Bart, editorial director of Variety Inc.
Daily Variety's new look includes a larger logotype, an update of one used in the '30s, printed in a deeper, brighter green. Editorial material is divided into sections: news; finance, including profiles, financial briefs, and stock quotations; reviews; and short takes. The left column of the front page is an "Inside" box highlighting major stories within the paper, and there is a more complete table of contents on page 3. Charts have also been redesigned to be more focused and readable.
The eye-catching green is used for additional graphic elements, including a new front-page box featuring an important box-office gross, a rating, a quote, or an anecdote. Headline and body typefaces have been modified for cleaner reproduction on a heavy, bright-white stock. Overall, the new design uses more color, graphics, and photographs for greater accessibility by the reader.
Executive Editor Stephen West, who joined Daily Variety from the Los Angeles Times Business section in September, and his editorial staff now use the latest in word processing and networking equipment.
In response to reader input, the redesign was initiated and overseen by Bart and Daily Variety publisher Michael Silverman. The new graphic look was conceived by premier publication designer J.C. Suares and the Daily Variety editorial staff.
What hasn't changed with the redesign, according to Silverman, is the unique style and independence for which Daily Variety has been known, since its founding 58 years ago by Silverman's great grandfather, Sime Silverman. For people in the entertainment business, to make positive front page news in Daily Variety not only validates an achievement, but is considered an achievement in itself. Daily Variety's writers and editors are still known for their clear- eyed objectivity and unique style.
Reporting on the full gamut of companies, stars, executives and mavericks that make up "the biz," they have been at the forefront of making the general public aware of the business side of showbiz -- everything from box-office grosses to corporate takeovers to elaborate deal making. The paper has taken on the government, organized crime, and powerful influence groups in headlines such as "Commie Carnival Closes," after the first round of Congressional investigations into communist influence in Hollywood in the 1940s. Its editorial leadership makes Daily Variety a unique voice that reports the news of the entertainment business directly to all members of the influential entertainment community.
Advertisers use Daily Variety's pages as their preferred vehicle for communicating directly with the entertainment industry to sell a product or service, announce a deal, congratulate an award nominee or present a point of view.
Daily Variety is a publication of the Cahners Publishing Company, a division of Reed Publishing U.S.A.
