COLLEGES

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  

The Cougars swim team has its final home meet of the season Friday. The meet will be a chance for COC See chip on chip.  standouts such as Derek Ervin and Christine Castellano to test themselves against some of the Western State Conference's best. Mustangs Ryan Higton, a sophomore, and John Anderson, a junior, shot 225 in the three-round event and finished in a tie for second among individual golfers. Anderson's 76, 78 and 71 rounds marked his best peformance of the season.

Jeff James and Joe Chally both placed in the top 35. Chico State beat the Mustangs for the team championship.

HIGH SCHOOLS

Canyon

The baseball team faced its biggest challenge of the young season Tuesday with a home game against defending Foothill League champion Hart, but the Cowboys have showed that they have the pitching to contend for the league title.

Jake Coash improved to 3-0 with last Friday's complete-game victory over Valencia and Sergio Almanzar threw a no-hitter in the season opener against University. Canyon continues its league schedule Friday at home against Burbank.

Hart

The golf team, led by Brian Edick, competes against Santa Barbara and Carpinteria in a nonleague three-way at 1 p.m. today at Montecito Country Club in Santa Barbara.

Edick is coming off a one-under 71 at Sterling Hills in Oak Park on March 7, the lowest competitive round ever shot by a high school golfer, according to course officials. He is averaging 1 1/2 under par this season.

The Centurions are holding their annual softball alumni game Saturday, April 20, and are looking for Looking for

The Vikings boys' golf team has a nonleague match today against Granada Hills and Buena of Ventura at Vista golf course at 1 p.m. Valencia follows that with a match Thursday against Marmonte League power Westlake. The Vikings hope the tough week prepares them for their first Foothill League match next week.
