Saugus

The boys' volleyball team is showing no signs of the problems that plagued it last season, starting the year 4-1 with victories over Lancaster, Chaminade, Quartz Hill and Alemany.

One reason for the quick turnaround is first-year coach Matt Gillis, who is making his high school coaching debut. Gillis played volleyball for the Centurions from 1991-1995, helping the team to the second round of the Southern Section playoffs and earning All-Southern Section honors his senior year.

Gillis inherited a team that has 11 seniors eager to improve upon their last-place Foothill League finish last year. The team plays at Littlerock at 5:30 p.m. today.
