DAILY UPDATE.COLLEGES College of the Canyons The women's undefeated 200-meter relay team faces a tough challenge this week at the Mount San Antonio Invitational meet. The team of Felicia Schoefer (Canyon), Whitney Ensdorf, Sarah Mannino and Naamah Naamah (nā`əmə), in the Bible. 1 Daughter of Lamech. 2 Mother of King Rehoboam. Ussery improved to 4-0 with a victory Friday over Citrus. The women's team lost the meet 64-46. The men's team defeated Citrus 74-23. - Gideon Rubin The Master's College The men's basketball team's thrilling 84-77 overtime victory Saturday over Central State (Ohio) University gave the Mustangs a 17-12 final record, good enough at most schools. But The Master's had won at least 20 games for 10 consecutive years and played in the last seven NAIA National Tournaments. Both of those streaks appear to be over. ``The problem is, around here the expectations are so high, we've had so many fabulous years that even when we have a good year, it's not satisfying to a lot of people,'' coach Bill Oates said. - Chris Cocoles HIGH SCHOOLS Canyon It should be another banner year for the boys' volleyball team, which returns eight seniors from last year's team, which won the Foothill League title and went 12-2 overall. Outside hitter Jesse Alo, 6-foot-1, leads the returnees, including middle blockers Skyler Chambers and Brian Waite and opposite hitter/outside hitter Marcos Borja. Valencia should provide the closest competition for Canyon. - Rich Hammond Hart The brackets have been determined for the Hart Classic softball tournament, which figures to be one of the area's best this year. The tournament begins March 3 with 16 pool-play games; the 16 teams will be divided into four pools. Hart was placed in Pool A with Chatsworth, Harvard-Westlake and Sylmar. Hart, a traditional power in the Foothill League, returns seven seniors: Carly Caldaronello, Sara Dean, Stacey Holbrook, Lorian Jenkins, Lindsey Kontra, Kristin Lueke and Casey Pickard. - Rich Hammond Saugus The weather has altered the baseball team's plans on multiple occasions already this season. Saturday, the team's scheduled doubleheader against Highland was canceled because of rain. Unwilling to let the weather stop them from experiencing some baseball, the Centurions went to USC, where the Trojans had a doubleheader of their own against Mississippi State. The Centurions were forced to go without baseball as the USC games were rained out as well. The Centurions hope the weather will clear up before their season opener Friday against Sylmar in Saugus. - Kevin Flavin Valencia The boys' basketball team finished with a respectable 15-11 record, but the Vikings will have a difficult time making up for the senior losses from this year's team. The Vikings will lose all three players - Alex Dunwoody, Albert Ingram and Jose Velazquez - who averaged double figures in scoring. Ingram led with 17.3 points per game, followed by Dunwoody at 11.2 and Velazquez at 10.8. Dunwoody was also the team leader in assists (72) and was second on the team with 110 rebounds and 40 steals. Only three players - juniors Jeremy Linebager, Mike Morales and Ryan Zike - will return next year, and none averaged more than five points per game. - Rich Hammond |
