COLLEGES

College of the Canyons

Quarterback Jason Winn's hopes of returning to the football team's lineup officially are finished for this season. The Cougars, who have four regular-season games remaining, decided to have Winn redshirt this season because of his slow progress after suffering a broken hand in the season opener.

Winn redshirted as a freshman at Texas Tech last season. After transferring to COC, he began as the Cougars' starting quarterback. However, he hasn't played since the opener, when he completed 15 of 27 passes for 109 yards.

The Master's College

With a strong returning nucleus, the men's golf team could be a contender for the Golden State Athletic Conference title.

Returning sophomore Ryan Higton and junior Joe Chally led the Mustangs to a tie for third at last weekend's Chico State Invitational.

Higton's second-round 66 was the lowest score of the tournament. He finished at 6-over par 222, good for second place. Chally tied for 12th at 231. The Master's is 10th in the NAIA national poll.

HIGH SCHOOLS

Canyon

If the football team is to even its record at 4-4 today, the Cowboys will have to stop Saugus running back Brandon McCullough. The teams meet at Canyon at 7 p.m.

McCullough has rushed for 890 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games, and the Cowboys are the worst team in the Foothill League defending the run.

The Cowboys' offense is based around quarterback Nate Longshore, but the Centurions have been great on pass defense this season.

Hart

Hart can clinch a Southern Section Division III football playoff berth by beating Burroughs (4-2, 1-1) of Burbank at 7:30 tonight at College of the Canyons.

The three-time section champion Indians (6-0, 2-0), coming off a 26-0 victory over Valencia, are going for their 51st Foothill League victory in a row. But they'll do so without standout running back Tim Gregory, who broke his ankle last week and is scheduled to miss four to eight weeks.

Burroughs defensive lineman Gabriel Moise Jr. is an all-state candidate. He's also a hard-running fullback.

Saugus

The return of longtime Canyon coach Harry Welch brings new interest to the Centurions' game at Canyon (4-3, 2-1) tonight. Saugus (4-3, 1-1) coach Ron Hilton was an assistant when Welch retired from coaching in 1993.

``I'm sure Harry will have some tricks up his sleeve,'' Hilton said. ``He always has his players playing at their best.''

Valencia

Stephen Wright has yet to score on offense for the football team, but he's been making up for it with scoring plays as a defensive back, something that could help the Vikings (6-1) when they face Burbank at 7 tonight at Burroughs High School.

The junior, who has five receptions for 58 yards, has scored twice and started other offensive opportunities while playing defense. He's made five interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and recovered two fumbles, one of which went for a touchdown.
